Fear

by Miesen

Change cowers in corners
like little scared rabbits.
We are prisoners chained by fearful habits.
Sixty percent are content with the lie.
Most of the rest are unwilling to try,
interned in lock down,
just trying to get by.

We lack faith enough to trust;
rather than step over the line
we sit home and rust.
We favor a world of justice and peace,
but we’re unwilling to invest,
preferring the sophistry of
a self-imposed house arrest
to the unsettling risk of thinking
and speaking our mind,
or carrying signs into the streets.

Consider the consequences,
the dangers, the potential ruin,
if you were heard repeating
the chorus of an unpopular tune.
Or, consider the world
we are certain to miss,
if fear continues to mistake
ignorance for bliss.
