Whatcha Readin'? Dude, Where's My Country, Michael Moore

by Mycenay

Michael Moore knows how to rant, but he rants with facts. Moore reminds us that we have a selected President who is looking out for himself, his buddies, and his contributors. Moore cites atrocity after atrocity—including the Enron scandal, the large losses of Iraqi civilian lives, tax cuts for the rich, and our government’s treatment of the French (you know, that country which helped the founding fathers establish this country, gifted us with the Statue of Liberty, and then had the audacity to not join us in the war against Iraq).

Moore then calls for a regime change. His first choice personally is Oprah Winfrey with Ramsey Clark a close second. From Moore’s perspective, if Bush were out and someone else were in (preferably Oprah, but any democrat will do), then everything will get better. (Anyone besides me hearing The Who singing "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…" in their head?)

Moore is right, new leadership is needed, but not just at the level of the presidency. It’s needed at all levels everywhere—at all levels of government, in corporate boardrooms, within the medical establishment, throughout the educational system, in the religious institutions. Because, what’s not being addressed is the sickness at the heart of the entire system. And what’s the system founded on? One can speculate, but how about starting with underlying motives and intentions. What inspires a person to run for President? To head a mega-corporation? To devise new and creative accounting techniques to serve the few at the top? How about to be of service to others; to be an active peacemaker; to help elevate the consciousness of the those one administers? Probably not. But what a much nobler country we would be if those were indeed the qualities within our leaders!
